The challenge
The family loved their home, but the kitchen had become too small for the way they lived. Everyday meals felt cramped and when friends or family visited, everyone naturally gathered in the kitchen, despite there not being enough room.
Rather than moving, they wanted to create a home that could grow with their family while keeping the memories they'd already made there
Unlocking the potential
Instead of treating the extension as simply "adding more space", the design focused on creating a new heart for the home. A generous open plan kitchen was positioned at the centre of family life, creating space for cooking together, entertaining friends and bringing multiple generations around one table. Large openings connected the new living spaces with the garden, while carefully designed storage and a calm material palette ensured the space remained practical as well as beautiful.
Every decision was about improving the way the family lived, not simply increasing the floor area.
The outcome
The project creates much more than a larger kitchen. It creates a home that grows with the family. A place where grandparents, parents and children can all gather together. Where everyday meals become shared moments and special occasions no longer feel squeezed into a room that has been outgrown. That's the real value of thoughtful architecture. Not simply creating more space, but helping people enjoy the home they already love.
